LiDAR1

LiDAR1 is an annual VR online gaming event broadcast via Twitch, played in tournament rounds and accompanied by a moderator. It has its constant elements, however, not in the specific game (this deliberately varies with each edition), but in its completely unique gameplay. It breaks the fourth wall on different fronts: Escapism no longer whisks participants away from their own living rooms into alien worlds, but turns their living rooms themselves into alien worlds.

By means of room scanning and virtual reality, the game is adaptively transferred to the participant’s own four walls, making what is seen virtually tangible in real terms. The participant scans his environment independently and the system transforms it into the game world with adapted aesthetics and virtual elements. In addition, LiDAR1 even allows the user to interact with virtual game elements with his bare hand. Movements, including hand gestures, are the user’s own. The game console is the cell phone.

The paper format was presented at the biennial c-tv konferenz in 2022 in front of representatives of various television networks, such as Canal+ or ORF to illustrate the way forward into a new era of cross-media formats.
